Join Us For These Great Events In August

Hello to my fellow 4-Star members, and everyone else who has attended our events,

I’m writing you to let you know about some of the exciting events that the 4-Star Democratic Club is putting together in the coming month, and to encourage you to try and attend either or both of them:

* Thursday, August 6, from 7-9PM - John Dean, “Blind Ambition: The End of the Story”
* Wednesday, August 26, 7:00 PM - Dinner/Discussion “MILITARY 101”

Those who have been to our events in the past already know about the scintillating discussions, interesting speakers and subjects, and, just as important, good food, that we have at our dinner/discussions. We have hosted events and and discussions with notable people such as Wesley Clark, former Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb, blogger Kevin Drum, Professor and U.S. Intelligence expert Amy Zeigart, and Phil Carter, writer, blogger, lawyer, soldier, and now Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs. Attendees participate on a level of discussion and interest that is not experienced at a typical speaker event, bouncing ideas off of the speakers and having ideas bounced back. We have also held fundraisers for Congressional and other candidates, and participated in numerous other forums and discussions with other groups close to us.

I am thrilled to let you know that we will be carrying on more in that vein in the coming month, and urge you to join us at these events.

John Dean, “Blind Ambition: The End of the Story”
On Thursday, August 6, from 7-9PM, 4-Star joins the West LA Democratic Club, as well as numerous other local clubs, in welcoming John Dean for a conversation and book signing about his latest book, “Blind Ambition: The End of the Story.” This engaging talk will take place at the Venice Center for Peace and Justice and the Arts at 2210 Lincoln Blvd. in Venice (corner of Victoria). Suggested donation is $5.00. To reserve seating, be sure to RSVP to ingrid0034@aol.com. For more information, visit http://www.westlademclub.org.

Dinner/Discussion “MILITARY 101”
But the event I really can’t wait for is Military 101, ‘What every American should know about the U.S. military's structure and culture,” on Wednesday, August 26 at 7:00 PM at Polentoni Italian Wine Bar Restaurant on Jefferson Blvd. in Culver City (also known as Café Robertos). The Truman National Security Project will join with us in presenting an absolutely necessary event for every progressive who cares about our national security and knowing about our military and its role in our country.

Military 101 is presented by area residents and progressive veterans Melissa Epstein Mills and James F. Murphy. Their goal is to provide information which helps us citizens and our leaders to better understand the difference between the military and civilian world, with the goal of creating relationships and a greater understanding between progressives and the people serving in the military.

For far too long, the military vote has been a lock for conservatives, whereas there are numerous reasons why members of the military should, and often do, support progressive causes. For too long, the problem has been the inability of progressives to speak with those in the military in a language that they understand. Military 101 helps to bridge that divide.

There is a huge vote out there, there are gigantic areas of change that are possible as progressives gain a greater share of the military vote. This program will be instrumental in helping us better understand the military and veteran community, so that we can better gain their support.

In short: SAVE THE DATE & DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT!!! You will receive your invitation very soon.

The good news: We are still able to host this event, as well as provide a tasty dinner and great atmosphere, for the same prices we have charged in the past: members, $30 and non-members, $35. And for $40, you can attend and join the 4-Star Democratic Club, or renew membership, through February 2010, the end of our membership cycle.

Did I mention the great dinner?

The 4-Star Democratic Club is planning four dinner/discussions in the coming year at regular intervals. Watch for our invitation to another exciting event in November!

So, please join us for this great event, sign up for 4-Star, come to a monthly meeting or two, and help us plan our next event. We look forward to seeing you.

Regards,
Greg Apt
President, 4-Star Democratic Club
